Steve Fee, Jay Hardwick and God
No, I'm not putting these three on the same level, but all three of them had a huge affect on me a couple of weeks ago.
Jay Hardwick of Awaken Columbia called me on a Wednesday, asking if I'd lead
worship at Awaken that Sunday. Due to a turn of uncontrollable events, a friend
was in need, and I was willing to help. But I'm not proud of the first thing
that crossed my mind - "on this short notice, I'll pull out a few of the
easiest songs I know and it'll be all good." But then Jay dropped the bomb
by telling me HE had already chosen the music for Sunday. That bomb exploded
when I realized I had never played ANY of those songs. So, for the next 4 days
I jumped in and prepared to make the worship set as excellent as I could for
God.
One of the songs was a yet-to-be-released cut from Steve Fee called Glory To God Forever. In that song, Steve writes; "You gave me breath so I can praise Your great and matchless name all my days..." The first time I heard it, I played that line over and over as it sunk deeper and deeper into my spirit.
God was using Jay and Steve to remind me that praising Him is the ONLY reason we were made. Not to have a happy marriage, not to make a lot of money, not to have fun, but to praise Him with our whole life and with everything we do or don't do with it.
Then, the next line in the song really knocked me over: "So let my whole life be a blazing offering, a life that shouts and sings the greatness of our King!"
Wow! Not only are we to praise Him all our days, we are called to do it in a way that others could describe as blazing! We are to shout and sing of His greatness! We can't just go to church, or say "I'm a Christian" or do good things and expect people to notice our God at work in us. We have to SHOUT it and magnify Him in all that we do and with all that we have.
Since that night, I've tried to live up to those lyrics. I challenge you to make some adjustments in your Christian walk that will shout and magnify Jesus to a lost and dying World around you.
I'm so thankful for that call from Jay. I'm thankful for Steve Fee's songwriting, and thankful to God for using that turn of events to help get me more focused on making "my whole life be a blazing offering."
